FWIW, the B2 install process worked for me. I think I used "b2-install-1.0-rc7.zip" at the time. Unzip to a USB stick, plug in and turn on with power-button depressed, and wait 15..30 min or so for light to stop blinking. Make sure you unzip in such a way that the top-level on the USB stic...

Anyone got thier bubba two server to work with time machine for backup storage? Yes, it has been running nicely for three weeks here - including going back in time, i.e. the "starry-night" gimmick. Set up requires some tricks, documented elsewhere and not specific to the Bubba/II box. Goo...

Thanks! FWIW, I recently tried enabling the auto-spindown built into the kernel driver, but couldn't get it to work. Whereas "sg_start 0 /dev/sdb" works fine to spin down. Spin-up is automatic, i.e. on first access to the drive. Great. Using just the sg_start command, you could even simply...

The following should let you turn off apache and install lighttpd, then you can find out for yourself what the differences are: * set "NO_START=1" in /etc/default/apache2 * stop apache before installing lighttpd: /etc/init.d/apache2 stop * install lighttpd: apt-get install lighttpd AFAICT,...

Some routers such as FritzBox and SpeedTouch can pick up the client's host name during the DHCP handshake. That way, the Bubba can be identified by name regardless of what IP address it gets - that's how I use it. Look into parameters "send host-name" and "send dhcp-client-identifier&...

Even quieter and even less power (been using a NSLU2 that way for over a year). I just wanted to mention that it works - my Q applies to any size disk of course.

Replace, then re-mount internal disk as external one?

FWI, I've replaced the internal 3.5" HD by a 2.5" model. It works like a charm. You just need to secure the disk with sticky two-sided tape to keep things together since there are no mounting options for a 2.5" model. I just wrapped scotch tape around the entire disk + board assembly ...

SSD for Bubba|TWO

Solid State Disks are starting to become a viable proposition. Here's a recent announcement: http://gizmodo.com/5042335/samsung-tweaks-ssd-design-for-low+cost-low-density-drives-for-netbooks This might be(come) a nice option as internal HD, since SSD's are silent, can match Gigabit Ethernet speeds, ...

@Johannes: Thanks. Good point regarding SSD - my thought was: get a B/II asap, and plan to get SSD later when prices come down and storage sizes increase. With the usb + esata ports, there is excellent extensibility, and gbit ethernet + ssd would make a potentially extremely responsive server, even ...

Congratulations with BUBBA|TWO - excellent specs and trade-offs! One question: will it be possible to plug in a 2.5" SATA drive internally? (apart from form/mounting issues and the suitability for permanent-on use...) Or perhaps an alternative: if an external USB-powered 2.5" disk is plugg...

For someone willing to figure out all the details, you could: - use hdparm to turn on automatic spindown when idle - add an usb stick to contain a filesystem mounted as perhaps /var/ (so all periodic log writes go there) - mount the hard disk with "noatime" so cached read accesses don't ca...

... or perhaps a future 2.5" HD based product? Even less power & noise, even without spindown.

I've used something similar based on a NSLU2 box + ext 2.5" usb disk (+ psu) - not as nice as having the HD built in, though.
