Arch: Adblocking with dnsmasq and hostsblock

Another thing "I just did". 1. Install hostsblock from AUR (to be described in more detail, if someone needs that). 2. 'systemctl start hostsblock' (it's one-shot service, you need to re-run it every time you want new file generated). 3. Marvel at how slow your name resolution has become after /etc/...

Re: Off-site backup

Why won't it allow rsync? I don't think that rsync on remote machine is a must?

Re: Off-site backup

Frankly, no. I had my own doubts about running cygwin, but I'm testing on for last half a year on my production workstation and it doesn't seem to cause any issues. Care to share any links?

Re: Off-site backup

I measured both with and without compression, not much difference actually. For me, the link seems to be the limiting factor. Yes, the script could use a bit more parametrization, I might add some when I need it :-) I think I also explained why I do it this way around. As usual, I had a requirement ...

Off-site backup

Since I got so much help from this forum (hat tip to Gordon, Sakaki, MouettE and Ubi :-) ), I thought I'll share my off-site backup "system" for backing up remote Windows server. It's going to be a long post :-) 1. What and why. I'm doing IT for a small bookkeeping/financial company. They are runnin...

Re: Practical, up-to-date (2015) use-cases for a B3?

I'll just add that I actually bought 6 of those boxes, 4x no Wifi and 2x Wifi, when they started to be discounted (I paid 60-75 Euro for each, reasonable price). 1 is my home Linux server/router/whatever I need it to be 1 sold to a friend of mine, and I continue to support it for him 1 sold to a com...

Re: Practical, up-to-date (2015) use-cases for a B3?

Klingan, do not get me wrong - I usually prefer my stuff to work out of the box (so I rarely compile from source, for example) - it's just my usecase. Compared to Synology etc. - all those boxes have 40mm fan cooling the drives, most have just a single Ethernet port. For me the silence of operation ...

Re: Practical, up-to-date (2015) use-cases for a B3?

For me the use case is "2 TB ultra-silent, power-frugal, fast NAS with normal Linux on-board" and "SSH server at home that is up 24/7".

Frankly, there is currently no alternative on the market. Zero, none.

Re: resolv.conf not updated?

The other box is router/server, set up according to your instructions - so that'd be a 'yes'.

Re: resolv.conf not updated?

Ha. Ha. Ha. Turns out I have _not_ solved this before - it's just for some weird reason on my primary box 'resolvconf -u' is run after 'systemd-resolved'. The proper solution: Add /etc/systemd/network/eth0.network [Match] Name=eth0 [Network] DHCP=ipv4 [DHCP] UseDNS=True Then: systemctl enable system...

resolv.conf not updated?

Stupid thing, and I already solved it once, but apparently forgot how I did that. My secondary B3 does not update resolv.conf with info from DHCP. It's running Arch (sakaki build). All updated to newest packages. It simply leaves resolv.conf with: # This file is managed by systemd-resolved(8). Do no...

Re: What witchcraft is this? System transfer problem

I still think that it does something to partition tables - I was only using fdisk to check/see; besides, even kernel does not recognize them. Maybe I'll dig a bit more in some spare time. Anyway, I gave up trying to restore the system - after all, the reason to set up /home on separate partition was...

What witchcraft is this? System transfer problem

I'm in deep trouble. It's quite probable you're going to facepalm a few times when reading this, but please refrain from caustic comments - I'm already quite exhausted after spending my entire Sunday (which I had other plans for) on this issue. TL;DR: I do not have working system, and B3 seems to be...

Thanks for reply :-) I am using btrfs currently, no issues. Just now I'm copying data between 2 btrfs volumes, one SATA and one USB, with avg speed of 23 MBps.
