Re: B3 | USB-laptop cooler & autostart script / HDD temp
F you were that concerned, why didn't you get your B3 with a SSD? I need my B3 for backup and media sharing. I need a big HDD, 3TB is the biggest I can get. I don't know if there is such big SSD disks but if there was, I could not afford it. The HDD spin down/sleep is interesting because it would s...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
Yeah, sure or I'm at least interested in seing what and how it is doing :) Btw, here are some nice hacks http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_hard_drive_clicking #!/bin/bash lastval=0 while : do newval=`smartctl -A /dev/sda | awk '$2=="Load_Cycle_Count" {print $10}'` if [[ $newval !=...

Re: B3 | USB-laptop cooler & autostart script / HDD temp
After some testing regarding HDD spin down/standby I'm beginning to think that it is not a very good idea, at least not to implement on B3 out-of-the-box. It is one thing to get it working on a clean system but most of us install 3rd party programs and it is much work to monitor all possible changes...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
Yes, it is disputed how bad this really is, but in any case you should known that we finally got hold of WD's tool for ARM to remove this Load/Unload behaviour. So from 2.4 on LCC count shouldn't move anymore. You did? I searched EVERYWHERE for that darn tool. Doesn't seem like they want anyone to ...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
OMFG, yes it sounds to me like you will soon have an fresh OS install party on a new HDD. I don't know what a "safe value" is but yours seems like it is running for the world record! Are you by any chance running B3 on a WD green HDD? edit: try to calculate how many cycles there are in 10...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
edit: I guess I can check with this sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep Load_Cycle_Count My load_cycle_count is currently 933568. I don't know if it might be a good idea throwing a party when it passes a million? You can see my smart statistics graphically here http://ideel.nl/bubba/bubba/daniel.bubba...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
Yes, it is quite a pain. But hard problems take time to get solved and impossible takes a little longer. It would be nice to see with what kernel parameters B3 is booted and also what filesystem/s are being used. ext4 accesses HDD more often than ext2, syslogs should not be a problem but the /tmp co...

Re: B3 Air Cooling Modification
@puma;
how hot is your HDD after this "mod"? Is the fan running all the time?
I'm having similar ideas for my (hopefully coming) B3 but with a laptop cooler.
edit: what is that "temp control" you have there next to the fan?

Re: Finding out what's using disk
I know that because I can hear it seeking. It normally only sounds like this when I'm watching movies or downloading stuff, now it's all the time. How frequently can you hear it seeking, all the time or every X minutes? I've noticed that sometimes before a HDD crashes, it can make sounds like it is...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
Ok, sorry, missed that!
Btw, how do you know that the HDD is in use (read/write)? Have you tried to stop all services (not 100% needed by the OS) and start one by one?

Re: Power Save Mode B3
Well, I didn´t measure, I was just assuming according to what it says at the plug - 12V, 3A Anyway, in your example 83% of energy is for the drive... Cheers, Karsten In another thread I got the idea to run the OS from a USB memory. Then you could safely also run B3 in laptop_mode and if _only_ file...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
Iotop support will be included in the kernel releasing with 2.4 soon. Thanks Excito! (however I still don't know what's using my disk now. Guess there's nothing I can do about that for the moment?) /Daniel try from the B3 terminal: ps aux Look for processes that is "suspicious". Also, wha...
