I didn't get a "carl" directory either.
Perhaps you had some special attention?
Anyway: this has gone WAY off-topic, and the OP hasn't even responded since your first reply.
We should have our little discussions elsewhere...

Re: Users path
Hi Gordon, Why not a group/users that is NOT part of "users" or other groups - hence of the "other" category? Then for example: find /home/storage/video/movies -type f ! -perm 640 exec chmod 640 '{}' \; find /home/storage/video/movies -type d ! -perm 750 exec chmod 750 '{}' \; ww...

Re: Users path
I assume we are all talking about the web interface now... Try this: Create two users using the web interface: testuser_a and testuser_b. As testuser_a, put something in your home folder (secret.txt). Log out and then log in as testuser_b. Access the home folder of testuser_a. You can see the file y...

Re: Is this a successful intrusion
how is openvpn more secure than key-based SSH? It's not, just another alternative that was not discussed in the thread. EDIT: Actually, having thought about it for a minute: I think it is. I use it every day to get access to my network at home. I still have to use ssh to get access to the b3 though...

Re: Is this a successful intrusion
I agree with Ubi, you have several options, and all are covered in this thread: - Disable ssh from outside - Change the port number - Use denyhost/fail2ban or similar - Use good usernames and passwords. I must add this though: I was once the target of a distributed ssh attack. Why anyone would be in...

Re: Is this a successful intrusion
Hi, I use denyhosts, but I find it a bit ineffective, probably because I have customized it a bit too much (because it was too effective to begin with). I've never tried fail2ban as mentioned by Ubi. However I do check my logs regularly, and when I find entries like yours: Jul 19 06:50:02 whatever s...

Re: Has anyone tried converting a large B3 LVM system to ext
OK, it is done now.
And it seems to work just fine! I left the /dev/sda1 partition alone of course, but /dev/mapper/bubba-storage is now ext4 and using extents. It took forever, and several fscks were needed during the operation.
I will let it run for a while before tweaking reserved blocks etc.

Re: accessing /home in rescue mode (b3)
Hi zjuul, There could be many reasons your B3 is no longer booting. I would start by booting with the rescue stick, then mount /dev/sda1, just as you have done, then look at the log files. If mounted as described in your post it would be things like: /mnt/var/log/syslog /mnt/var/log/fsck/checkfs.sh ...

Re: Has anyone tried converting a large B3 LVM system to ext
Hi Ubi! Thanks for your interest (and also your always present and amusing scepticism :)) Well, I have multiple HDDs (in S1 enclusures) connected to my B3 via a eSATA port multiplier. All bundled up in the "storage" logical volume as separate Physical Volumes (several partitions/PVS per di...

Re: Has anyone tried converting a large B3 LVM system to ext
OK, I have now tried this on a small scale on the B3 - preparing for the big jump! I set up a new Logical Volume consisting of several Physical Volumes, formatted them to ext3 and copied 100 GB of files to the file system. File sizes varied from a couple of bytes to 10 GB. I looked at several guides...
