Re: think modern! light fibers ;-)
jws, [..] Cut ONE fiber off, one drop of superglue on the fiber, fix on LED. Lead it anywhere you want. (a quality optic fibre of 50m will even transport the light to your bedroom;-) Regards and have fun! Hapé A brilliant solution! But for now I'll stick to the low-tech method of using a small mir...

Jan, just a hunch, but could you test your previous situation (with hang) but now with FireFly service OFF? I don't know what you mean by FireFly; nothing like that shows up in ps aux. But from Googling I gather that it has something to do with daap. I am not interested in daap, so I took some dras...

Re: is it really dead?
If jws could background a process that blinks the LED every 30 seconds, even after trashing ethernet, the Bubba could indicate that the CPU is still alive... I just did a test, trying to copy a 50GB directory to the Bubba2, while running the "life indicator" described in my previous post....

I just wonder... is it (crash/hang....click) OR (click .... crash/hang)? Don't know; it feels like click ..crash but it could just as well be the other way round, because the crash itself does not give a visible or audible sign. When I hear the click, I type in a login shell, and there is no reacti...
utf-8
The forum uses the iso-8859-1 character set. Please change this to utf-8. The market for the bubba is international, after all.

I also found a small C programme to calculate prime numbers (remember to remove the line breaks if you copy+paste into vi or whatever) - http://bellard.org/mersenne.html This took over 10 hours on my Bubba 1 ! I had a similar programme on my 1MB 286 computer years ago and that took 4-5 days to comp...

Unfortunately it failed again after (uninterrupted) copying of 20 GB out of a 35 GB directory. By that time the disk temperature was 42 degrees C. Trying again after plugout/plugin and restarting was not successful: -- immediate restart and retry: immediate crash -- waiting for a while, then restart...

Ok, thanks for this information, it helps. And don't worry about the 30 day return period, this issue is clearly a warranty issue. This behaviour is not acceptable for a server, we'll either fix it or offer replacement or return. Thanks for your patience. Some more data that might be useful: Today ...

Get pi.c from http://www.jw-stumpel.nl/pi.html Do cc -o pi -O2 pi.c (in the -O2 optimisation directive, O is a capital letter O, not a zero). You may need to apt-get install gcc on the bubba2 before this works. Do this both on Bubba2 and on a Linux desktop machine. Then run on both machines time ./p...

Re: Installation problems with nakes Bubba TWO
I don't know what the sources are of the terminology you're using, but I use "formatting" in the reinitialisation sense. What you mean is probably "low-level formatting", i.e. making a round piece of iron oxide into a data disk. This is never done nowadays outside factories. It ...
