Will Excito open up TV sweden?

Post by fredrikj »

When I bought my B3 I was really excited about a Swedish company that appeared to completely embraced the concepts of open source and open hardware. Since then the waining maintenance of bubba source repositories and your work with the completely proprietary V1 has me worried.

TV Sweden is a cool gizmo, to me seems to have the right features at a great price. My finger is on the buy trigger, but I hesitate because Excito's announcement does not mention that open heritage which made me excited about the B3. I do not want to buy a product that relies on closed source. I do want the ability to tinker with the software that runs on hardware that I own. I want to have the confidence that when (not if) Excito decides to shift focus again in the future, the source code that runs on my hardware is available, and if I have to I can maintain that myself going forward.

So, Excito, what is your strategy for TV Sweden? Will this be a dead end proprietary closed source only solution, like the V1? Or do you intend to return to the open source foundation that used to make your products great?

Hi Fredrik,

We are still very much an open source company, our developers live by that but this product (TV Sweden) is something else. For various reasons (such as focus on user experience, business with larger customers etc.) we will not open this device up for you guys, we (developers) would like to but business does not allow that. I very much understand where you are coming from and what you are after in a product, but this particular product is not aiming for your target group, regrettably.

Sorry!

Sadly Big Media don't like open products with or without DRM.
So many of us root our devices as soon as we get a new one, but then we also have to accept that a few media sources are no longer accessible to us. It sucks, but, so far, they make the rules.

Thank you Johannes for your sincere response on the openness issue. While obviously it is a strategy that I'd hope you'd be able to avoid, I do understand that there are some business reasons behind it.

I'll keep my eye out for future open products from Excito and in the meanwhile I'll continue to enjoy my B3.
