Parental control

Post by Caper »

Would be appriciated to be able to control users on my network, my stepson is spending way to much time in front of his computer.
I know there are applications that let me control it but would be nice to have that feature in the Bubba Two!
Was thinking of limit his Internetaccess or onlinegaming to lets say 2 hours per day.

Hi,

It doesn't come as standard, but their are ways to do it using quota's etc, but as you have limited Linux experience, might I suggest something like http://www.censornet.com/

Very good thread discussing this on http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ux-521665/

Didi some research, found this thread and a good solution.

Bubba can rely on a chosen DNS, whay not choosing OpenDNS with the option parental control and use it as a default DNS on bubba? I think this would do the trick...

I'm thinking the objective here was not about where the kid was surfing to (we like to think that kids have the same rotten visions and dirty minds as ourselves, but they don't) but how long he is surfing.

Some years back my company was involved with a product called Connectux - a kind of noob linux based SBS server - and they had this build in option to allow internet access to just certain people. While that sounds easy, it's not as much and requires trickery. The Samba login script would call a small Windows application that triggered a script on the Connectux server which would then insert firewall rules to allow internet access to the station where the permitted user was logged on to. Working from this concept it should be fairly simple to add a time limit and daily restriction to that access.

Edit: Here's an article on how something similar could be achieved with Squid.

There's also an old (written for B1) Squid how-to which should still work

There probably are several tools out there that can fix this. But this is a feature request.
Make it available through bubba's admin panel. For the HUGE market of moms and dads that can barely start up they're WIN8 pc let alone install some linux script/app.
Some parental controls will open up the parent market for Bubba as THE home server.
URL blocking per IP adres, time control per IP adress,
Nothing to sneeze at:)

Yes, there sure is a market for this. Just saw this one: http://www.miipc.com/. An entire computer just build around parenting control. So I have to agree, this would be a great thing for Excito.

My kids (6 and 8 years) have started exploring the web by themselves recently, so I have plans for setting up something Squid based on my B3. Haven't really got around though and it would be a big plus with a big "parent control" button in the B3 web admin :D
