What did you do with your spare Bubba/B2/B3?

Post by RandomUsername »

OK, so my new (essentially free - thanks Johannes!) B3 is sitting on my desk waiting to be set up and I'm in a dilemma as to what to do with my old B2.

My ideas so far:

1. Leave it at a friend/family member's house to use as off-site backup storage.
Pros: I'd save 10€ p/m on the online storage I'm currently paying for.
Cons: it will be hard to convince anyone to agree to it.

2. Use it as a testing/development unit.
Pros: I am less likely to mess up my B3.
Cons: I think it would be a bit under-utilised, I never had a problem making changes directly on my B2 before. Also, with the architecture and OS/software versions being different this has less value.

3. Mod the case (i.e. remove the motherboard), run an e-SATA cable straight into the case and make my own Bubba Storage.
Pros: cheaper than buying a Bubba Storage.
Cons: a bit of a waste and not really needed at the moment.

4. Sell it on flea-bay/Excito forums/wherever.
Pros: I get money.
Cons: not sure what the demand would be. I might not get as much money as I hope.

What has anyone else done? Any novel ideas?

Thanks.

Darren.

Hi,

I had the same "problem".
When I moved from my B2 1TB as gateway, webserver, music, storage, etc server to
a B2 32Gb SSD gateway and a LaCie big 5 as RAID 5 storage NAS,
I gave my B2 1TB to my father in law, so he now uses it as a backup server.
Using rsync it sync's his documents/music/etc to me as offline backup
and I sync to him as offline backup.
Someone I met (using different equiment) told me he had set something like this up for his entire family,
so everyone had a (encrypted using truecrypt) backup of everybody else.
How safe can you be :D
And everyone benefits.

Now I ordered a B3 Wifi and i am considering using the B2 as my DMZ server,
hosting my website from there.

If you or anyone else has interesting idea's, I also like to know !
cheers

My Bubba server (the original one) is at my office, acting backup for everything personal on my B3. A nightly rsync makes me sleep well...

I'm planning to do the same: brand new B3 at home as server/torrent/NZB/storage and my old B2 elsewhere as a backup and at the same time as data storage for them, backing up to my b3

Thanks for the replies.

I'll think I go down the route of talking my old man into leaving it at his house and having a mutual backup system.
