Hallo,
I am not very experienced in installing software ore operating systems under Linux.

My Excito B3 runs Linux b3 2.6.39.4-11 #1 Tue Apr 3 21:45:12 FET 2012 armv5tel GNU/Linux at the moment.

Is it possible to upgrade directly to Debian stretch (9) from my running OS?

It seems to me that my B3 is not running as well as in past. I use it as NAS with two connrcted USB Drives.

If yes I have two more questions.
Shall # remain in the install.ini for settings to be installed or in other words are comments signed by ## opposit to -for instance- the samba smb.conf file where a line starting with # is a comment.

Can I install Open VPN Server after upgrading?

Many thanks in advance

Kindly regards
erik

Hi
I tried to use this to upgrade my bubba, have been ignoring the fact that the excito os hasnt been supported for a while, but now when I needed to change disk (due to a crash) I thought I could just as well use a fresh image.

However, I run into some issue. The log seems fine, or almost fine, there is an error in the middle. However, the install seems to progress in spite of this

Code: Select all

2016-01-09 10:03:21.891 - ERROR - [sfdisk] Partition #1 contains a ext3 signature.
I am trying to wipe the disk, using the full 3TB disk that I replaced (I already had a 3TB disk, the only difference is the age and that I changed from WD Green to WD Red.)

Everything seems fine until the reboot. Then the LED turns red and I have no clue on why. Reboot again gives the same result.

(I tried to attach install.ini and install.log as files, but I got a strange "Invalid extension" error in the forum attachments box. Adding them below as text)

Would be grateful for any ideas on what went wrong (and how to fix it)

Regards,
Erik

install.ini (non-commented part)

Code: Select all

image = stretch/b3-stretch-1.0-20170703-2130.txz
copy-network-settings = true
wipe = true
size = full
swap = 512
reboot = true
install.log

Hello,

I'll try to help you debug this.

First, the ext3 signature error is not relevant, it's just a warning that there is exisiting data on the disk getting wiped.

Do you know which version of u-boot your b3 is running ? If not can you run the rescue system and give the output of this command :

Code: Select all

strings /dev/mtd0 | grep -i u-boot

Thanks, really appreciated. It seems version is 2010.06.

Code: Select all

[root@b3-install ~]# strings /dev/mtd0 | grep -i u-boot
U-Boot 2010.06 (Jun 10 2011 - 09:06:51)
U-Boot
** Invalid partition type "%.32s" (expect "U-Boot")
u-boot
flashfile=u-boot.kwb
[root@b3-install ~]#
EDIT: I tried the default disk size and then upped to 2000 (G) and it works!
So it has something to do with the disk size. Either the full setting is not working properly or something gets too big for some system part at 2.7TB, but not at 2.0TB

OK that seems fine. I need to run a couple of tests at home to try identify the cause of the red led. I'll get back to you in a couple of days.

And as follow up, I tried with size = 2600. This also resulted in a failed boot.

Could it be related to this?:
http://wiki.excito.com/w/index.php?titl ... _3TB_disks

Seems a bit weird since I already used a 3TB disk with the old excito OS dist, but the issue indeed seems to occur for a disk size above 2TB.

It doesnt tell which version of uboot you need to support 3TB or what version is provided by the install package, so I would only know by trying to use it. Any advice?

The version you use is the version mentioned in the wiki. So this should not be a problem.

Just to be sure, when you try to boot what is the led pattern ? (purple then red or is it another sequence)

I just saw your edited comment, good news.

So with the default disk size, you get a 10g root, and it boots. Then you grew it to 2T and it still works. When you grow it above the 2T limit, the b3 won't boot anymore ?

Yes, more or less. I havent tried anything between 2000 and 2600.

I also havent paid attention to the led sequence at initial reboot, it follows a long time setting up the system. Additional reboot after the first does have a purple LED followed by the red LED.

It's likely that U-Boot doesn't like too large ext3 filesystems. You could try to flash to the rodeus version available at http://install.excito.org/b3/uboot/beta/ using the instructions on the wiki page you mentioned earlier. It's more recent so it may work. I don't have 3tb drive to test it.

Hi
It didnt help. In the end, I settled for a 10G boot partition and then added a "data partition" that I mounted on /home

It makes use of all the disk, and the main purpose of having all those 3TB was anyway for users data. Hopefully the 10G will always be enough for whatever services I want, as long as I keep the bulk of the data in /home

Thanks for your help
