fetchmail fails on pop3, but so does telnet 110

My fetchmail fails to collect email from my pop server. Watching it with tshark gave me no solution either. I tried replicating the problem with telnet by
using a command of telnet server.com 110
I get a connect. But when I send the CAPA command I don't get any response at all and the CAPA packet is resent by the TCP layer. If I try this on another machine I immediately get a -ERR response from the server which is what I expect. I first thought it might be a line termination difference. But tshark showed both machines sent "CAPA" followed by 0D 0A. Any ideas ? I was going to try this from Bubba 1 but no telnet package was present. Thanks for any help in advance.
