Problems with FTP from the outside

Post by rewien »

Hello All,

I'm having some problems with FTP, when I try to access bubbtwo from outside.

I'm using Fillezilla FTP Client to access Bubba two and Am getting error:

"530 Login incorrect."

When I use the same data " my username & paswoord" I'm able to access bubba Two with the FTP Client In my home network.

I think the error is at
host

At home I type for host:
Bubba
But to reach from the ouside:
name.bubbaserver.com
Can some one help me out?

Thanks a lot,
Rewien

To reach your bubba from outside your home, you'll have to use your public IP address rather than name.bubbaserver.com.ie. my IP address is 81.xyz.xyz.xyz, so when I fill in the FTP server name, this is what I use.

I hope this helps...

I had a similar problem connecting to my bubba one from outside using my mobile phone; this was eventually solved by setting the mode to active rather than passive. Maybe that's the problem here...?

Look carefully at the reply :
Answer: 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,xyz,xyz,xyz,xyz,206).

It's the local IP , in the private address space which is non-routable.

With PASV the FTP server 'asks' the client to connect back to *this* address.

Google on "pasv ftp firewall" and you will get loads (and loads..) of info.

No, your FTP server is providing its internal (private) address to the external client. The client cannot reach such addresses over the internet as the range 192.168.x.x is limited to private use (i.e. only used on private [intra-]networks)

There are several ways to overcome this problem, but all are far beyond the scope of this forum.
The link provided should give you at least some clues, but you could also try finding more on the internet by searching for "ftp (server) behind firewall" .

Be prepared to absorb a LOT of information, as mastering networking is a study on itself.

Kind regards,

Hape
