using bubba2 alongside existing wireless router

Post by john coyne »

I have a wireless router (Vigor 2600G) which i want to keep in service while i figure out how to use a new bubba2.

Its DCHP service offers one of a range of fixed IP addresses to clients.

I'd like to plug the bubba's LAN connector into one of the router's ports and then cascade the wireless access from the Bubba using its DHCP service.

Will this work? Any hints?

Thanks,

I think this should work, provided you disable wireless on your router (otherwise clients will not know whether to connect to your router or bubba). Cabling should be as follows:

router --> WAN-port on Bubba
LAN-port Bubba --> clients
Wifi Bubba --> clients

You may need to ensure that your clients are looking in the right adress range for DHCP services (don't know whether your current router offers something in 10.X.X.X or 192.168.X.X range)

What works (at last) is to set Bubba to be "server only" and enable its wireless access point.
It looks like bubba then acts as a bridge rather than a router; the existing router's DHCP service provides the IP addresses.

So I have ADSL filter -> Vigor 2600 router -> Bubba's LAN port -> Bubba's WAP ...> clients.

Not ideal, as I'd like to use the router and firewall capabilities of Bubba and I'd like the wireless subnet to use a different set of IP addresses from the orginal (static) set of IPs which my old router uses. And I have to keep my old router on permanently as part of the kit.
