Is it possible to install jre on Bubba 2, and if so, how?

Thanks for any help and kind regards,

Java isn't very fast on the Bubba|Two, but it's still possible to some extent. I made these notes two years ago, so I'm not entirely sure if they're up to speed anymore. They are also for the entire jdk and not just the jre:

I never got the sun jvm to work, but had success with IBMs. I downloaded
32-bit IBM POWER SR-7 from http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/ ... nload.html

As root or sudo:
apt-get install libstdc++5

Then unpack the file you downloaded (tar -xvf filename), and move it
into a suitable place, I moved it to /usr/local/java/jdk.

Add JAVA_HOME to your shell or system wide (/etc/profile)

JAVA_HOME="/usr/local/java/jdk"
export JAVA_HOME

Optional add $JAVA_HOME/bin to path:
PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
export PATH

java -version should now work.

I've just upgraded my Bubba 2 to the latest Bubba 3 version 2.4 (very smooth installation process). While trying to install the ibm java version I get the following errors.

Code: Select all

root@b2:/home/pmurphy/download# ./ibm-java-ppc-jre-7.0-0.0.bin

As an alternative, if I try to use the open source headless jre at

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/powe ... s/download

I get the following:

root@b2:/home/pmurphy/download# apt-get install openjdk-6-jre-headless
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package openjdk-6-jre-headless is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'openjdk-6-jre-headless' has no installation candidate

My sources (/etc/apt/sources.list ) have the following, so I'm a bit stumped as to why it has no installation candidate.

# The debian squeeze repository containing unsupported packages that can be used.
deb http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian squeeze main

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Philip
