Problems with fetch mail and DNS addresses

Post by Clive »

Hi all,

I have had major Bubba 3 problems over the past 24 hours (self imposed!) which forced me to rebuild and re-install my Bubba 3 from scratch.

Everything is nearly working again, but the final problem is Fetchmail which is unable to access the external IMAP mail servers by stating the DNS name or the servers, it only works if I specify the IP address directly.

Any ideas ? As can be seen below, my Bubba 3 can ping the DNS name, but fetchmail is unable to get the IP address from the DNS name

Hi Clive,

Can you post your /etc/resolv.conf ?

TIA

Hmm, is that the issue ?

The name server is not the one specified by my internet provider ? That IP address is my home router's admin port..

root@b3:/etc# more resolv.conf
domain lan
search lan
nameserver 192.168.1.254
root@b3:/etc#

<edit> No, changing the name server to my DNS server did not work :(

Clive,

try changing your resolv.conf like this :

domain bredband.net
search bredband.net
nameserver 195.54.122.193
nameserver 195.54.122.194

The nameservers in this file are the 2 nameservers for bredband.net (ns1.bredband.com and ns2.bredband.com). I hope this will solve your problem.

Regards,

Thanks Effevee!

Unfortunately that didn't work, but I fixed it by copying the resolv.conf from my Mac.

It was the same as my original resolv.conf, but missing the 'search lan' parameter. I am not sure what this does, and but my mail is now working without it.

the search and domain lines don't do anything usefull really. They are meant to allow you to shorthand local machines. So if you enter "domain blabla.com" and you type "ping somehost", it will auto translate into "ping somehost.blabla.com". Thats pretty much it ...
