B3 and truecrypt

Post by skulkrik »

Hello

Have anyone tried to use Truecrypt on B3? What kind of access speeds did you get? I'm considering to upgrade my B2 but I have not yet decided if I should get a B3 or not.

When you run e.g.

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile bs=100K count=1K
on the Truecrypt volume what kind of results do you get?

Best regards

Can't tell you anything about the speed, but maby Asad that wrote the wiki-post might?

Eh, yes. But only did it as a test/POC to see if it would install and run. I did not actually use it, so I'm afraid I can't answer skulkrik's questions about the performance...

I have to put my faith on Asad or on someone else having too much spare time between Christmas and New Years Eve then :)

Well since i have been lurking the forum the past week or so (gave myself a B3 1Tb Wifi this christmas) and basically tried out most of the tutorials in the wiki i thought i would give this one a try as well.

Compiled truecrypt (7.1) from source and i am now creating my first container.
I might have overdone it since it says its 13h left... ;-)

Done: 0,428% Speed: 4,1 MB/s Left: 13 hours

Anyway, I will let you guys know what i find out tomorrow.

Running dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile bs=100K count=1K on my truecrypt storage:

104857600 byte (105 MB) kopierade, 19,043 s, 5,5 MB/s

However the result varies from time to time. Sometimes i get 5.5MB/s, sometimes 6.4MB/s and sometimes as low as 3.3MB/s. It seems like the 5Mb/s is the most common result on my drive.

Without truecrypt is a whole other story:
104857600 byte (105 MB) kopierade, 1,49625 s, 70,1 MB/s

Sorry for the swedish terminal ;-)

niclasb, thank you very much for your help!

The numbers, unfortunately, have not improved that much compared to my results on the B2 :(

Is there any alternatives to truecrypt if I want to protect my documents & files?

I am using truecrypt on B3 now, but i am getting really tried of the files transfer speed, 5.5Mb/s, and some days i move a lot of data in my line of work.

I have an lvm encrypted with luks (partial how to here - http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f ... =Encrypted). I don't really see any performance hits with it.
