Tor + socks5

Post by supermagnum »

At present, the stock TOR configuration does not provide a SOCKS5 proxy.
How do i set it up as a transparent proxy, and why is that function not included from stock ?

i think that a option in the GUI should be included, something like TOR proxy on/off.

AFAIK, TOR is strictly a Socks5 proxy. The basic setting is for it to listen to localhost connections only though, which actually makes sense because there's not many applications out there that will actually target Socks5 directly.

I know Tor does good things, but i stopped Tor because in the Netherlands this is used for child-pornografie distribution.

Yes, the concept of being able to use random IP's that do not trace back to you directly will be very much appealing to people that do controversial things. However the Netherlands is also famous for having BREIN, an institution that is working on enforcing internet censorship and recently succeeded to get a judge rule over two ISP's to block internet access to the Pirate Bay for their subscribers. TOR is a good project to get around this type of censorship, which is unheard of so far in the free world but most common in countries that we consider to be suppressive.

I just wanted to inform others that Tor is also used for other purposes.

I my wife was abused as a child this struck me very hard.

People who want to commit nefarious acts like distribute child gargamell will always find a way to do it. Don't blame the technology. If you get rid of Tor they will just find another way (as indeed they did before Tor was invented).

This is the mistake governments keep making because they don't understand technology and teh interwebs.

EDIT: laughing at the word filter, I'd forgotten about that.

In the Netherlands, and a lot of other countries, cars are used to kill people (direct (crash) and indirect (airpolution)).
But people still use them...

Yeah but a better equivalent would be that you live next to a bank and you pave a special path so people can walk through your garden to a window in the bank so they can break in.

The point is that people do not use YOUR car with YOUR permission to commit criminal activity. In contrast, the kiddy pr0n is really going via YOUR cable, encrypted as it may be. So your analogy is moot.

This is exactly why I will never host a TOR node.
Although I support privacy and the right of anonymity and the TOR project.
The chance that criminal behavior could be conducted through my connection,
is unacceptable to me.
Also exactly the reason I could never be a lawyer

@ubi
I was thinking about the cars that polute the air that I breath.
Anyway...much to far off topic.

Think that @eek points the problem exactly, choose between privacy and abusers of the system.
I'm lucky enough to have the choice. Hope that TOR won't be needed in the future in those #%@$&*! countries.

(and that the 'kiddy p0rn excuse' will not be used in our 'free' countries to kill our privacy)

well indeed the kiddy p0rn is a bit of a godwin-equialent these days, in a way that you force the opposing party to be in favour of child p0rn or accept your stance. Still i feel there are currently other ways to be privTe on the internet without resorting to tor. The moment Brein won their appeal is however the moment my tor nodes will go up.

Correct.

Do you want to transparently proxy all traffic through Tor? Wifi or no wifi? It's possible to do, but we decided not ot include that functionality by default because a lot of users can end up de-anonymizng themselves without even knowing it.
