But why risk your reputation on giving out potentially buggy installers when a fresh install and full upgrade works just as well?

I disagree
You damage a reputation when you promise something that you cannot deliver. Giving out experimental versions AS WELL AS stable versions is not a risk to reputation as long as you are clear about the difference.

The linux kernel has a pretty good reputation depite that you can download the daily dev edition that may very well crash on your hardware.

I only mentioned if this new installation image will be available, because of the uncertain future of B3 further development and support. What if Excito decides it will no longer provide the update mechanism, and all we are left with is install image 2.4.1.1 (those who will be fortunate enough to actually have it downloaded)?

Speaking of future support and development... are now (in these uncertain times) any plans for further upgrades?

i think what you refer to is that, in the current situation, the up-to-date version of the B2/3 depends on the viability of server named b3.update.excito.org, which indeed is currently not under open control. This seems to be indeed the current situation.

MouettE made his own install images and describes in this topic how to use them. By repeating what he did you can also create your own payload file and have the rescue stick install your current version of the B3 software - including everything you added yourself.

I have a B2 that was hacked. I read the threads on the issue and applied the shell-deny, the crontab-cleaning and the chmod to the hacked executable. Now I would like to upgrade and I understand that I can expect ver 2.5.x, but the software update page just states that "No upgrades available"
Package name Package version
bubba-frontend 2.0.0.9
bubba-backend 2.0.0.11
bubba-album 2.0.0.4
filetransferdaemon 0.50.20
squeezecenter 7.5.4.dfsg1-2

When I try manually I get:

Code: Select all

bubbatwo:~$ change_distribution elvin
-bash: change_distribution: command not found

So am I good? Or stuck?

I set up my B2 a few years ago and remember modifying some files to do with repositories in order to install something extra. Could that be a cause?

I feel really rusty at the command promts so any help is appreciated. :D

Hi Jan, yes, you are running the original Bubba 2 software, which is no longer upgraded or maintained (stopped at 2.0.5). HOwever we did release the newer B3 software also for B2 users, read here. However it requires a re-install, since this is a very large update you cannot do it through the web interface, this is why the "update" button doesn't do any good for you.

Accidentally disapproved this post in stead of approving
Apologies to Odoepner

Hello,

Given Excito's recent focus shift away from Bubba and given that security issues like the one addressed in this thread can /will come up again, wouldn't it be the right thing to release _all_ of Excito's deb packages as Open Source and give the Bubba / Debian community a chance to gradually adopt the maintenance of the awesome Bubba software?

In the long run and with the right gradual hand-over approach you might even find official Debian maintainers adopting your packages and make them part of the Debian distribution itself.

I for one would help make this happen. I am a long-term Debian user, proud owner of a Bubba/2 running wheezy, used as file and print server, sharing family photos with my family across the globe via bubba-album package, etc.

Thanks

My post above by user Binkem was originally not posted to this thread, but to the one about the 2.6.0.1 release (security upgrade).

I will post it again in the right place.
