Firefly constant rebuffering with iTunes

Post by shocks »

Hi

I have a bunch of MP3s on my Bubba 2. When streaming from Bubba with Firefly to iTunes they don't get past 25-30 seconds before a "Rebuffering stream" pop-up window appears. Rebuffering doesn't occur - the progress bar doesn't change at all. I have an HTTP sniffer installed on my Mac and I see no incoming data once the pop-up appears.

Any ideas? Right now streaming media is unusable on my Bubba.

Hi,

Just to try to pinpoint the problem, are you using a wireless network?
If so, can you try it also with a wired connection to see if you experience the same behaviour?

Hi

It's a wireless network. I'll try wired when I get back home. I am able, however, to stream (share an iTunes library) from 1 Mac to another Mac over my wireless network without problems. Also, wireless transfer of files between Bubba an Mac is fine.

Hi again,

Can you both post which versions of your OS and Itunes that you are running? This could help us in debugging this issue.

Regards

The one which says rebuffering and nothing happens (after playing for 20-30seconds) is:
MacBook Air >> Bootcamp >> Windows XP pro-version 2002 SP2
Apple iTunes 8.0.0.35

The one with no problems:
Dell >> Windows XP pro-version 2002 SP2
Apple iTunes 7.1.1.5

I can't find the firefly log (were is it?). Both work wireless and have full access to bubba2 only firefly strange (i was testing making filelists). If i can find the download version which is installed on the Dell i will install that one on the Mac and see, also will check the other apple when i'm home.

Hi,

The logfile for firefly in not turned on by default.

As root, edit /etc/mt-daap.conf, remove the '#' infront of 'logfile'.

Restart firefly :
#/etc/init.d/mt-daapd restart

Logfile shall be in /var/log/mt-daapd.log

I saw an interesting in the user.log >>

bubba mt-daapd[2499]: *** WARNING *** Please fix your application to use the native API of Avahi!

I tested the aplpe again and first song went fine, but second stopped at 0:42 the error log stops at:
(498294e0): Session 0: Streaming file 'file' to 192.168.1.100 (offset 0)
Second song stopped at 0:19

mt-daapd.conf only one error in begin of file: (498294e0): Error loading plugin /usr/lib/mt-daapd/plugins/ssc-scripts.so: plugin declined to load

(strange in the conf file i see an commented ssc_prog with the filename mt-daapd-ssc.sh (once again i have no apache knowledge))

And some unknown meta data concerning itunes like:
Unknown meta code: daap.songalbumartist

Hope this give some more information...

The log returns the following:

I also experience the same problems, running iTunes 8.0.0.35 on Windows XP. I'm on a wired net, BTW.

I cranked the debuglevel of Firefly up to 8 to see if I could get something out of it, but it didn't give anything more useful.

It seems, in my case anyhow, the buffering issue occures when Firefly start the file scanner. The last message in the log, at the exact time of when the buffer got lost, is "Rescanning database".
The same also happen when I pressed the "Start Full Scan" from the web-interface.
I noticed that there scan type i set to "Aggressive". I'll try to set it to "Normal" and see if that helps, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.
I'm to old to be us this late...

Any further thoughts on this? Is is possible to run another app so I can stream on a Mac (and test the connection in the process). Right now Bubba 2 isn't working for one of the reasons I got it.

Setting the scan type to Normal didn't change anything.
As far as I can see there's nothing in the log that says what goes wrong. There is a "Write error: Connection reset by peer" but that comes after clicking Stop in iTunes "Rebuffering" window, e.i. after the stream is gone.

I have used FirePlay, a flash client, for a couple of hours and it doesn't seem to suffer from this issue.

shocks try an earlier itunes because i think it is a firefly issue (maybe it needs an update because the svn number is a bit old)... save your playlists etc etc, then try to install an early version ...

1) drag the iTunes from the App folder to the trash.
2) open the system monitor (from the utilities folder) and find and stop the iTunes helper.
3) Empty the trash
4) copy and rename the iTunes folder from the Music folder to somewhere else
5) Download v7.6.2 from http://oldapps.com/download_iTunes_mac.php
6) Install it as usual

== edit == it didn't help me but on the xp system it gets rebuffering message while doing nothing at all i also experience that transferring 1Gig file to the storage folder gives me a hang up, while on the other xp system i can transfer my video easily and play itunes easily... Any news on this subject ?

I have Win XP Pro SP2 and wired network and tried a number of different Itunes versions including 7.1.1.5 but the rebuffering problem does not change.
