Re: [solved] Please shift "admin" to a UID < 1000 to match D
did you perform a search to see if there are no orphan files? What do you mean exactly by "orphaned" file? If you check 2 postings up, I searched the whole filesystem with "find /" for any files owned by admin or belonging to the admin group. The only ones were in /home/admin. I...

Re: Please shift "admin" to a UID < 1000 to match Debian
I just performed it manually on my B3: usermod -u 900 admin groupmod -g 900 admin chown -R 900:900 /home/admin (just a few hidden files in it) I choose 900 to allow higher numbers for future additional system users in case they are selected in ascending sequence. Afterwards manually changed UID of u...

Re: Please shift "admin" to a UID < 1000 to match Debian
Thanks for your reply, there actually are only a few files/directories which are owned by admin: find / -user admin /home/admin /home/admin/.bash_history /home/admin/.bash_logout /home/admin/.profile /home/admin/.bashrc find / -group admin /home/admin /home/admin/.bash_history /home/admin/.bash_logo...

[solved] Please shift "admin" to a UID < 1000 to match Debia
I just discovered an awkward configuration on B3: User "admin" has UID=1000 GID=1000. UID=1000 GID=1000 on Debian systems is usually assigned to the 1st user and so on all my other PC's, laptops, nas, ... Consequently only on the B3 I myself got UID=1001 assigned, This causes trouble with ...

Re: samba shares and character set?
Sorry, I have to correct myself! Blaming samba was the wrong address, I have to blame Gnome-VFS instead! Up to now I always used Nautilus to access the samba shares. Nautilus uses GVFS and libsmbclient to handle samba shares and GVFS does not support "unix extensions". What I now did: on t...

Re: samba shares and character set?
I think you need to re-read what I said. To put it another way, as samba is based on smb which originated from Windows, I imagine samba adheres to the same rules for filenames as Windows does. However, I'm finding it quite hard to actually verify that information. Best link I've found so far: http:...

Re: samba shares and character set?
Thanks for your reply, following characters (don't know whether tere are more) lead to mangled filenames displayed: ? : " One example filename -> displayed as: What do I Tell My Heart?.mp3 -> 0NFH8Y~B.MP3 What do You Say?.mp3 -> 0MWYMK~B.MP3 Please note: the filenames are correct on the B3 (upl...

Re: samba shares and character set?
I now tried to add to smb.conf im [global section]: mangled names=no but that just suppresses of those files, they just don't show up at all. Does nobody have a solution, I now found out that also the ":" (colon) causes filnames to be mangled :-( Or do I search in the wrong place: what is ...

[solved] samba shares and character set?
When uploading some files to B3 on samba-shares I got errors about some file(name)s. Also some filenames were "scrambled". Uploading via SFTP of the same files is ok and verify via md5sum as well. It seems to me there is a problem with character set. all client PC's and B3 run Linux. Check...

Re: Release notes for Excito B3 software version 2.4
Thanks Johannes, I now also cleaned up my packages and right - all seems to be fine. I just was concerned because also the web-interface uses Perl. At this occasion another question: is there any special reason why Debian-updates and -security are not in /etc/apt/sources.list? Shouldn't we add as we...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
So, one last posting regarding this topic: I now have located the source which is spamming in my local net and waking-up the B3 (*) and all is perfect with the above described modifications. When the device is not used/accessed by any PC I only get: 1 Start/Stop Count per day 2 Load Cycle Counts per...

Re: Power-off still consumes 6 watts, any solution?
Many thanks für your explanation, Johannes. My concern only was that there is still something up and running and "pulling the plug" might cause some damage to the system. The B3 ist craftet very well and I like it much, especially because of the free and open source software - an almost st...

Re: Finding out what's using disk
There is another oddity actually not with dovecot, but the web-interface for it: 1. You are able to switch-off email in the web-interface and it works fine. Appears to issue following commands: update-rc.d -f dovecot remove /etc/init.d/dovecot stop This is absolutely correct: it removes the autosta...

Power-off still consumes 6 watts, any solution?
I am measuring power consumption of my B3-Wifi on the primary (230V) side of the PS with a good power meter and observed a strange beheaviour: 1. under normal operation it consumes 10 - 12.5 watts depending on CPU-load. When totally idle it is 9.8 watts. 2. when HD unloads its heads and goes "i...
