Re: Boot problem B3

Be careful with that conclusion. We've seen many weird errors in the past years that were attributed to hardware failure, and nearly all of those turned out to be something else

Re: B2&B3 and GHOST vulnerability?

Again this xmlrpc. This thing has almost no practical use but keeps being an attack vector over and over again.

For the record: Exim is not runnin by default on the b3

Re: B2&B3 and GHOST vulnerability?

He's right to be worried about this because his risk is much higher than yours, and he is paid specifically to address issues like this. For personal use the cost-benefit ratio is rather different. It also depends on how your B3 is exposed to the network. If its behind a NAT then the risk is much le...

Re: B2&B3 and GHOST vulnerability?

you're not running your company on a B3 are you? this exploit is only useful (at this moment) as a local privilege escalation. You need to write local code for this to work, or you must find current code which has this function exposed to the outside world. Afaik this is not the case for the B23. So...

Re: Need Help for CIFS Client

what he seems to want is this:

Code: Select all

[videos]
        comment = Passsword-free access for my DVR
        path = /path/to/my/videos
        browseable = yes
        read only = yes
        guest ok = yes
but then you need to also change:

Code: Select all

security = share
guest account = nobody

Re: Need Help for CIFS Client

And we are not your slaves. You made many cryptic remarks that makes it difficult to help you. Youve alsobeen given multiple sets of documntation and pretty much everything short of someone coming to your house to fix it. And now you complain on the manner in which this free help has been provided. ...

Re: Debian Minimal Installation

I think you're making life very difficult for yourself without reason:

1) why not change /etc/groups to add your username to wheel
2) why not change /etc/sudoers to add users to the password-free sudo group
3) why not just change the password for root by editing /etc/shadow

Re: Debian Minimal Installation

If you can edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config then you already are root. And in that case you can just as well edit /etc/groups, as well as change the root password. Both are better than opening your machine to external SSH from root. Also, you can read /var/log/secure to see why your login is failing. This ...

Re: Debian Minimal Installation

the PermitRootLogin is only useful of you want to directly log on as root. Better to log in as a regular user and type "su -" at the command prompt. Please try that first and give the exact error message you receive

Re: Need Help for CIFS Client

Also, you cannot make an NFS share with SMB. They are really quite different technologies. What you can do is make password-free shares in either NFS (default) or SMB (http://www.debuntu.org/samba-how-to-share-files-for-your-lan-without-userpassword/). Please get your terminology correct or this is ...

both these last two questions are answered by using munin instead. Doesnt look nearly as nice as ezservermonitor but has a much wider range of monitoring tools.

Re: Distro question

I don;t think thee is one yet, but I guess whatever Excito 2.0 decides to distribute as a default will probably get most traction. Personally I like debian for these little boxes as recompiling takes too long. But its really cool to see all these initiatives with the different distros. I hope many w...
