really short flash (16 Hz) means disk malfunction, could it be that the disk is bad? Or that the disk is not properly connected to the motherboad? (Note though that "really short" can mean many things).

Could be a few things; 1) B2 can be a stubborn creature, and sometimes you need to try several times on step 8. If the blink does not speed up, try again, and again. If you tried 10+ times and it did not work: 2) something fishy with your usb stick. Try another one. Let us know if it doesn't help..

it depends on how old your B3 is, but you can check yourself (only the first batch - really old B3's - did not have this option, so you probably do). You don't need a bracket, just open up the B3 and remove the motherboard. Then connect the 2,5" disk to the SATA connector, directly on the board...

Yes, on new B3's it is possible to assemble a 2.5" disk as well.
