Release notes for Excito B3 software version 2.3

Post by johannes »

This is a new major upgrade. The upgrade is available both as a software upgrade and as an install image.

How to upgrade
To upgrade a running system, make sure you don't have any activities running such as uploads, downloads, print jobs etc. Then log in as admin in web-ui. Choose "Settings" menu entry. Choose "Software update" in the sub menu.
Note: Make sure to keep the "hotfix" option checked (see below). Press the "Update system" button.
Note 2: This update is quite large, and will take some time, probably close to an hour.

Since the update service depends on root access to the MySQL database, if you have changed the default MySQL password the update will fail. If it has been changed, run the update from the command line. Default options should be ok, but you need to provide your MySQL root password.

Install
To (re)install a system please read the users manual, section "INSTALLING & REINSTALLING SOFTWARE".

New features and major changes
* New backup user interface
* Sample photo album added from start (only for fresh installs)
* DLNA server (Mediatomb exchanged for MiniDLNA)
* Support for HP printers (including printer hotplugging)
* UPnP port opening in external routers
* PNG support in photo album
* Spanish language (user contributed) added to user interface
* SMB Workgroup changed from EXCITO to WORKGROUP to increase windows compatibility
* Various bug fixes

Note regarding the hotfix
For this update to complete, the hotfix is required to run. There are two options:

1) Keep the hotfix option enabled during upgrade
2) Update from command line interface. As root, run:

Code: Select all

change_distribution elvin
apt-get -c /etc/apt/bubba-apt.conf -y update
apt-get -c /etc/apt/bubba-apt.conf -y dist-upgrade
The hotfix is not required when updating from the command line.

Very big update indeed. 244 packages !

Update went smoothly, which is nice.

There were couple of things that caught my eye.

1. Status page has got a new line: attached printers... but the printer set up page seems to be gone ?? How does one attach printer to Bubba now?

2. Network /Wireless. I wonder why 802.11N mode is still grayed out and cannot be chosen. Available are mixed mode (N+G) and legacy mode (G)?

New backup interface is so cool. So much better and easier to use. Great !!
I'll have to test it right away. Hopefully B2 will also get same kind of backup interface.

@Henri,

Printers are now plug-and-pray.

Regarding the wi-fi settings - I have the option to choose N mode only. Are your timezone settings correct?

Plug and Play. OK that's good to know.

I checked again and yes time and date are correct (Timezone: Europe/Helsinki).

I went to the Network / Wireless right after the update (and after reboot) and Bubba gave an advice to set date and time before Wireless network can be activated. I did that and came back and wireless was running with the same settings than before update.

The N only mode is disabled and that is still a mystery???
Altough N only mode has been disabled for a long time before.

The restoring of backup was a bit tricky at the start, but after noticing that the restore folder has to be activated with a mouse click, the restoration went fine :)

The problem for me was a notification text bar (red rectangle in the upper left corner), which was floating outside visible screen area. I had to drag the restore backed up data window to lower and right on the screen to be able to see that notification: [This field is required].

Just wonderful :D , hope there will be one for Bubba|Two soon too  .

MiniDLNA as the UPnP streaming server :D , which will feed those crappy DLNA implementations like Sony Bravia, is a fine move.
 WARNING: Just remember to purge MiniDLNA from your B3 before upgrade, if you previously have installed it manually. Not doing so makes the upgrade leave packages bubba, bubba-frontend, bubba-server and minidlna unconfigured.

The wireless 802.11N mode is also grayed out in my settings too, even though I've set the timezone correct.

Further more an OLD BUG is still present :( - you are unable to send mail from the webmail interface, after upgrade. Even a clean install from USB seem to have this bug.

As "Cheeseboy" at 13 Nov 2010, 13:35 pointed out on the Ver. 2.2.0 Release:
http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2692#p12709

Changing the permissions on the file postfix main.cf file (as root) via ssh fixes this issue.
#chmod 644 /etc/postfix/main.cf

Oh, If you previusly manually installed MiniDLNA you can completely uninstall it (as root indicated with #) by:

#apt-get purge minidlna

@JC, thanks for pointing out the postfix bug, I completely missed that one. Now scheduled for 2.4.

Stuck at 99.98% with message

Retrying querying...
Was unable to connect to server; This is probably due to temporary shutdown of the webserver during upgrade. Please be patient. Will retry communication in 2 seconds...

No idea what could be wrong.

I left it for couple of hours after which I had to do dpkg --configure -a and then apt-get update, upgrade. After reboot everything is seemingly ok except the photo album still doesn't work.

If you have problems updating, please email support@excito.com with ssh login and Carl will take a look. As seen here there are potential issues with this update, at least if you have installed your own stuff.
