HDD Sleep / spin down?

Post by finklemcgraw »

I have not yet ordered a Bubba, but am seriously considering doing so.

As I understand it, one of the main benefits of the bubba is its low power consumption.

Is it possible to configure the system to turn the HDD off when it has been idle for a certain ammount of time?

Since I will be using it mostly for backup, it will not be used for extended periods of time, but I still don't want to turn it off due to the automated nature of the backups.

There's been a number of these requests.

The main problem is that the OS regularly needs the HD in the way it is currently set up. This makes spinning down not a good idea. What you need is
* strip all unnecessary procs that use the HD (custom runlevel or so)
* move /var/ to a USB key
* install the sleep/spindown software (I forgot the name, look around in this forum).

hope this helps
