Why is my drive always clicking?

Post by dan13l »

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help me work out what's going on.

I've recently changed the caddy on the esata drive I've got hooked up to Bubba, and repositioned them in my office. As a result, I can now hear the esata drive clicking away every couple of seconds.

Anyone have any ideas what's likely to be using the disk so often that it causes this? I can tolerate hearing the drive when I'm actually using it for something, but the constant clunk is kind of annoying.

Maybe I'll get used to it, but if anyone has any ideas or things I can try to work out what's accessing the disk so often, I'd appreciate it.

Dan.

OK, so this hasn't solved the problem, but it's a solution.

As root I installed hdparm and ran hdparm -M 128 on the drive in question. I can now hardly hear it.
