Bubba does not keep static IP address

Post by R. Schreurs »

I have a problem with my Bubba TWO. It will not keep the IP address 192.168.9.3 I gave it, but will, after some time, acquire an IP address from the DHCP server, like 192.168.9.141. This causes some problems, like the network mappings tot the bubba on my Pc fail to connect.

This is my setup:
Internet to ADSL modem LAN cable to WAN on Linksys router;
Linksys LAN cable to bubba LAN;
Linksys LAN cable to Pc LAN;
Linksys WiFi to iBook and Squeezebox.

ADSL modem has local IP 192.168.1.1.
Linksys has local IP 192.168.9.1, has DHCP server enabled and serves from range 192.168.9.100 and up.

Bubba:
Network Profile: Custom settings
WAN settings: Obtain IP-address automatically (DHCP) (remember: no cable in WAN port)
LAN settings: Use static IP address settings:
IP: 192.168.9.3
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.9.1
Primary DNS: 192.168.9.1

Identity - Windows share options
Hostname: bubba
Workgroup: <MyWindowsWorkgroup>

Version 1.2.4

I want to run bubba in server only mode, because the linksys already works as a router and has WiFi. I didn't want to have a third subnet. Documentation of bubba says to connect the LAN port. Is this also correct when using custom settings?

I cannot find a DHCP client list in the Linksys, so I am not quite sure the IP address 192.168.9.141 is served by its DHCP server. An indication may be that it reports the bubba:
C:\>nslookup 192.168.9.141
Server: <linksys name>
Address: 192.168.9.1
Name: bubba
Address: 192.168.9.141

The uptime it reports is 4 days 00:47:14, so the IP address has changed without bubba having been restarted.

What can I do to get this working? Should I connect to the WAN port? Should I set the WAN port on a static IP address? (I have tried this. now, no connection to bubba can be made, neither by smb, http or ping on bubba, 192.168.9.3 nor 192.168.9.141). Should dynamic work just fine?

Any help would be appreciated.

In your setup (equal to mine) choose the "Server Only" profile.

This has worked for me since i've got my B2.

The only problem i've had when i had choosen "Custom mode" with a fixed IP-address: i could not set the gateway and DNS-server.
