issues with updating

Post by gusan »

It might be that I'm misunderstanding the release notes, but the most current version for Bubba2 & 3 is 2.6, right?

Do i need to do anything special to update my machine, since it states that its:

Code: Select all

Software version	2.0.5

Code: Select all

bubba:/etc/apt# uname -r
2.6.32.13
and settings - software update sort of hangs like this: (i waited 30 min)

Code: Select all

Current package versions
Package name	Package version
Retreiving package information...
clicking the update system button gives No upgrades available.

Going commando-line:

Code: Select all

bubba:~# apt-get update

Get:2 http://update.excito.org upstream_etch Release.gpg [189B]

It could be that I have messed with the sources.list -file, I have tried to search the forums here for how it _should_ look but I guess Im not good enough searching since I haven't found anything... it might be a side-track, but what should be in that list?

Cheers,
Anders.

Is this a B2? I can't remember the specifics, but there was an upgrade that require a reinstall due to large changes in the code base. It should be fairly painless if done right.

Correct, from 2.4 and up we have merged the B2 and B3 codebases, to allow B2 users to get all future updates. However since this is a major system update we couldn't do it as a simple web update, it requires a re-install. You can read the announcement here:

http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3758

So with B2, you are stuck on 2.0.5 if you don't like the idea to re-install it.

Sweet!

Always wanted to do/try a backup-restore, but never actually dared to do it...looks like the weekend is saved now :P

:edit:

Should I also replace the internal HD? The one in it has been online & running 24/7 for the past 5 years, and who knows how long it will continue to work

There is only a partial correlation of drive age and chance of failure. Just be sure to make backups, and replac the dive when it actually dies
