An early review of TV Sweden media player

Post by jlind »

I will write this review in Swedish since the product is only sold in Sweden.

Hi jlind,

Many thanks for your feedback! We appreciate the positive stuff, and will look into your suggestions for improvements. The Homeland issue looks as a plain bug, we'll look into it (it has nothing to do with mobile rights, this is some other issue). We follow rights restrictions both on youtube and on SVT Play, you will see different clips depending on what you select as playback device.

Thanks!

I too tested the TV Sweden app, but on my Tele2 Player.
It connects fine and I can use the services as I expect ... apart from DLNA.

Trying to connect to my minidlna server I get nothing but crashes. Not only that, but it keeps remembering that I was trying to access it, so I can't choose to play local video anymore. Only if I clean data/cache or uninstall/reinstall can I get back access to local video. This issue existed already with the Tele2 specific app.

Also, there's still no Exit-button or proper Back-function. After using the app for a while and moving around the menus, the only way to exit the app is to hammer the back-button until the app has backstepped every move you made since it was started. Add to that the seemingly non-interactivity with the hardware. When exiting the app, the player will just sit there, doing whatever it was that you told it to do before you started backing out.

My device of choice is the Google/Asus Nexus 7, but the test was made on my Sony Xperia Z (Android 4.2.2). I just now verified the same experience on the Nexus 7 (Android 4.4.2).

@NoSubstitute,

Thanks for the feedback. I think that you running the Tele2 firmware on the box is causing some of your issues. If you would like to upgrade to TV Sweden firmware, contact us at support@tvsweden.se and we'll help you out.

However I'd really like ot solve the DLNA browsing crash you are experiencing, if I may kindly ask you, please select to report that crash to google next time it happens, then we can read out the crash log and dig into it. It does not have with minidlna to do (this is the DLNA server we do most of our testing on and it works fine with us), perhaps some strange characters in filenames or so we need to handle better. Help with this would be much appreciated, thanks!

I agree that back/exit is not very good in this app, improvements are planned for this, coming as an update sometime during first half of 2014.

Att koppla in Excitos mediaspelare blev i denna nya konfiguration mer självklar.

Done! :-)

I have been sending the crash logs every time it happens. I have tried the apps on a Sony Xperia Z and a Google (ASUS) Nexus 7 2012 edition. It's the same behaviour as with the Tele2 TV app.

Yeah, I'm guessing it will need some trick, for one of the benefits of lacking an Exit is that it doesn't stop the streaming when I back out completely and even swipe it away from the list of recent apps. The Exit code will have to send a command to the Player to go back to "Home" and idle there. As it is now, it just stays whereever you leave it, running some media or not.

Vill gärna uppdatera min box enligt ovan.

This product is getting better and better. With the latest updates its really stable and with radio and music streaming it’s becoming quite a competent piece.

I currently have two squeezebox receivers connected to the Logitech media server on B3. However it doesn’t seem to be a future for these since the system is no longer developed and no more players can be bought. The question is if the currently growing TvSweden player could become an alternative?

Have you considered adding the following?

* Synchronization btw players
* Spotify
* Pod-radio functionality

With these things on the TvSweden player it could be quite a challenger to Lms and players - in addition to the existing tv/video functions.

Fred, thanks for the nice words! And yes, we have all three of your wishes on the to-do list, but not for immediate development / release, we have other stuff higher up on the list. Consider your vote counted though, thanks!

Hej Hej,
