End of Arch Linux support for Excito devices

Post by stasheck »

Turns out Arch Linux decided to no longer support ARMv5 and ARMv6 architectures; no updates are possible since they 404'd the repositories.

...and now back to reinstalling my *everything* with Debian :/ Can't really afford to use more than 1 distro on my gear.

It's not unexpected given the nature of the distribution. Eventually debian will drop it also. And debian is not that bad compared to arch

The current release of Debian, 11 Bullseye, has planned LTS - Long Term Support - until June 2026. So you'll get a few years more with Debian.

As far as I know there hasn't been any final decision yet on whether the next version of Debian will support armel/amv5te. But it was discussed to pull support for armel already for Bullseye, so armv5 is perhaps running on its last leg even on Debian. We'll have to wait and see what the final architecture qualification will look like. Today it dips into the red.

PS. While it may appear a bit disruptive to just 404 the repositories, I like that it results in a very clear notice to the end user that this service is not provided any longer. The risk otherwise is that end users doesn't notice that their distribution or release has been EOL:ed.

Nah, it's neither unexpected nor really suprising, it's about time to put older hardware to rest. I was using Arch mostly because rolling distro is less management overhead than upgrading entire base once in a while, but I'm actually better versed in Debian ^^.
