Johan, Pelle,
Sorry that is takes me so long to follow up, but I have the whole thing running as it should by now.
In the first place, when I posted my first post I didn't have Ubuntu running, but a probably not even completely installed version of Linpus my computer came installed with. At this point, I decided to install Ubuntu, what was much easier than I ever expected.
This didn't bring the solution, but the command cifs was now recognised. Searching for my error-message “mount_data version 1919251317 is not supported“ led me to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=53016
which explains that the error-message is an incorrect reaction on a request for a not-installed smbfs. Indeed: installing smbfs solved this problem.
Now, another problem emerged: upon log-out / restart the computer hangs for a while, showing a screen full of text that suggests that it has to do with unmounting. This appears to be a known problem, according tohttp://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-serv ... 06206.html
This is reported as Bug 197346, and occurs beacuse unmounting is tried after the networkmanager has been shut down. The link gives a very elegant and simple solution for this problem: just renaming two files.
Thanks for the remarks!!
Ruud
