Printer not in Attached Printers list

Post by hywel »

After an upgrade to bubba 2.4.1.1, I have tried to connect my printer (OKI B6200). Fails to show up in Attached Printer list even after restart and/or dis/reconnect. Printer works OK on debian Stable on a different PC. Any suggestions?

System log when printer plugged in as follows:-

I have this issue too, on my B2, with my Canon MP610.

It's always worked fine, even with the 2.4RC version of the OS. Since I updated to the release version (2.4.1.1) the printer no longer appears properly in the B2 admin interface. Although, bizarrely, it does show up in the "Disk" section of the admin interface, as "sdb" a USB disk of zero size! And, obviously, it fails when I try to format it!

I guess this is related to this thread; http://forum.excito.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3567

It says there that the fix is scehduled for 2.5, but as my B2 is the print server for my entire house, is there any workaround or manual fix anyone's aware of?

Yes, there is a workaround that should work, you can go to b3:631 (the cups web-UI) and add the printer manually. If you can't find the proper driver (which probably is the cause for it not working) add it as 'RAW', which lets you select a driver on the client (PC) side later.

Awesome, yes, that worked a treat! You're a legend!

FYI; When adding the printer manually, I was able to find the proper driver, so I didn't need to add it as 'RAW', and so I guess that's not the cause for it not working.

Thanks again.

Which directory are the printer drivers in? I can get my printer to work with debian 6, so I can perhaps copy over the driver from there. Is it the RAW installation that allows Windows or cups drivers to be used, as I would like to use the printer from both clients? Many thanks.

The workaround above has also worked fine for me. Adding a new printer from the cups web-UI page found my printer and installed it with the correct name, etc. It is now available to both Windows and linux clients. When I plugged it in to the USB port, it initially failed with the error log as in my first post, so the lack of driver doesn't seem to be the problem, as noted above.

Many thanks for the workaround - though perhaps this could be added in a more prominent place?

Ok, yes, we are right now considering how to do this easier for you guys, perhaps re-enabling the printer setup menu and make it possible to override the automatic printer recognition using raw mode instead. It will show up in a release reasonably soon.

Yeah I can get my printer to show up on the homepage, but printing is not possible.

CUPS web interface shows always "not shared" even though I have checked the sharing checkbox and even tried to directly modify the cups conf-file and printers.conf too. The end result seems to be the same, I can't print from the network, not from Windows or Linux.

So I have probably broke it for good... :(

For me even the RAW functionality would be enough at this point. So the sooner a real fix is made available the better (or proper step by step instructions to do it manually).
